Hyderabad is a historic city in southern India known for the iconic Charminar monument, the mighty Golconda Fort, and a royal Nizami heritage of palaces, mosques, and pearls. It is famous for its world-renowned Hyderabadi biryani, a thriving technology hub nicknamed Cyberabad, and a rich blend of South Indian and Mughal-influenced culture, cuisine, and architecture.
Climb the Charminar and explore the bustling bangle markets of Laad Bazaar that surround it. Tour the hilltop Golconda Fort and the nearby Qutb Shahi Tombs, admire the treasures of the Salar Jung Museum, and visit the grand Chowmahalla Palace. In the evening, enjoy the lakeside views and the giant Buddha statue at Hussain Sagar Lake.
The currency in India is the Indian rupee (INR). In Hyderabad, cards and mobile wallets work in malls, hotels, and most restaurants, but cash remains useful for street stalls, markets, and auto-rickshaws. ATMs are plentiful across the city. Keep a stash of small notes for tipping, snacks, and short rides around town.
India recognizes Hindi and English as official languages of the central government, and English is widely spoken in hotels and businesses. In Hyderabad, locals commonly speak Telugu and Urdu, and the city has its own distinctive Hyderabadi dialect. Most visitors get by easily with English, but a few local greetings go a long way.
The best time to visit Hyderabad is from October to February, when days are mild and comfortable for sightseeing at the forts and palaces. Summers from March to May can be very hot, and the monsoon arrives around June. Visiting during Ramadan is special for food lovers, as the city's famous haleem appears in eateries everywhere.
Hyderabadi biryani, slow-cooked with fragrant basmati rice and tender meat, is the city's signature dish and a must-try. Pair it with mirchi ka salan and tangy raita. During Ramadan, savor rich, meaty haleem. Cool off with a Hyderabadi favorite, Irani chai and Osmania biscuits, and end your meal with the sweet apricot dessert qubani ka meetha.
Tipping is common in India but not strictly required. In Hyderabad, restaurants may add a service charge; if not, leaving around 10 percent is appreciated. Small tips for hotel staff and helpful service are customary, and rounding up the fare is a kind gesture for auto-rickshaw and taxi rides. Carrying small notes makes tipping much easier throughout your trip.
Ramoji Film City, one of the world's largest film studio complexes, is a hugely popular full-day outing on the city's edge. History lovers head to Warangal for its Thousand Pillar Temple and ancient fort, while the Bhongir Fort offers a rewarding climb and views. The Nagarjuna Sagar dam and Buddhist sites also make memorable excursions with Daytrip's private drivers.
