Munich's top attractions include Marienplatz with its iconic Glockenspiel, the Residenz Palace, BMW World and Museum, the sprawling English Garden with its beer gardens, the Olympic Park, Nymphenburg Palace, the Deutsches Museum (one of the world's largest science museums), and the Alte Pinakothek art museum. Beer enthusiasts shouldn't miss the famous HofbrÀuhaus and other traditional beer halls.
The best time to visit Munich is from April to May or September to October when the weather is pleasant and crowds are smaller. Summer (June-August) brings warm temperatures but more tourists. Late September to early October offers the famous Oktoberfest celebration. Winter (November-December) features charming Christmas markets, while January to March can be cold but offers fewer tourists and lower prices.
Popular day trips from Munich include Neuschwanstein Castle (the fairy-tale castle that inspired Disney), the picturesque town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Salzburg in Austria (Mozart's birthplace), Berchtesgaden, Lake Chiemsee with Herrenchiemsee Palace, and the historic city of Nuremberg. Most are within 1-2 hours of Munich.
Munich has an excellent public transportation system including the U-Bahn (subway), S-Bahn (suburban trains), trams, and buses. The MVV network connects all parts of the city efficiently. A day pass or multi-day ticket offers the best value for tourists. The city center is also very walkable and bicycle-friendly with numerous rental options. For day trips, Daytrip's private transportation service provides a comfortable alternative to trains.
The Euro (âŹ) is the official currency used in Germany. Credit cards are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and shops, but Germany has a strong cash culture, and some smaller establishments may only accept cash. ATMs are readily available throughout the city. Tipping is customary but more modest than in the US. Rounding up or adding 5-10% is typical.
In Munich restaurants, it's customary to wait to be seated rather than seating yourself. Typical dining hours are earlier than in southern Europe, with lunch from 12-2 PM and dinner from 6-9 PM. When finished with your meal, place your knife and fork together on the plate. To get the server's attention, raise your hand slightly. Tipping is done by telling the server the total amount you want to pay when they present the bill.
Munich consistently ranks as one of the safest major cities in Europe with very low crime rates. Exercise normal precautions regarding personal belongings in crowded areas or on public transportation. The city is generally safe to walk around, even at night in most areas.
Oktoberfest typically runs for 16-18 days from mid-September to early October. If visiting during this period, book accommodations months in advance as prices surge and availability becomes limited. The festival grounds (Theresienwiese) feature large beer tents that fill up quickly, so arrive early or make reservations. Traditional Bavarian attire (lederhosen for men, dirndl for women) is common but not required for visitors.
