Medina-Sidonia
Ancient and relatively unknown, this hilltop village allows visitors an intimate look at the monuments of its long, rich history.
Om
Founded by the Phoenicians, some historians consider Medina-Sidonia the oldest settlement in Europe. Over the centuries, it's seen Roman, Muslim, and Christian rulers, each of which left their mark on the city's landscape. Walk across the Roman bridge on your way to the Santos MĂĄrtires Hermitage, where you'll find the the oldest Visigoth art in Andalusia. From the Muslim era, there's the 12th century Torrestrella Castle, as well as arches dating back to the 10th centuries. The Santa MarĂa la Mayor Coronada Church is a magnificent example of Flamboyant Gothic architecture with Plateresque elements. The town is also famous for its "Alfajor de Medina", a Moorish pastry made with honey and typical Arab spices.
