Southampton throughout history

The estuary Southampton sits on has been inhabited since the Stone Age due to its fertile soil and access to the ocean, according to archeological finds. The first written records of human settlements in Southampton date back to the Roman era, with the establishment of Clausentum in the first century AD. South Western Railway has direct trains from London Waterloo Station to Southampton Central that depart around every 30 minutes during the high season of summer.
