A brief history of Riga
Riga's history dates back to medieval times. Although German bishop Albert von Buxhoevden officially founded the town in 1201, the area was already long inhabited. The town remained under German control until the bishop died in 1229.
From 1621, Riga and Vidzeme region was under the rule of King Gustav II Adolf, becoming the largest city in the Swedish Empire. But in 1710, during the Great Northern War (1700-1721), Russia took over Riga and Swedish Vidzeme, becoming the third largest city in the Russian empire after Moscow and St. Petersburg.
While under Russian rule, Riga experienced economic and cultural growth. The influence of Russian architecture blended with Germanic styles, creating a unique architectural landscape that can still be appreciated. âVi reste frĂ„n Riga till Vilnius via Bauska slott (60 min) och Rundale Palace (60 min). De meddelade oss förarens detaljer nĂ„gra dagar före resan, vilket var en lĂ€ttnad. Föraren var en vĂ€nlig gentleman med bra engelska och kĂ€nnedom om sevĂ€rdheter. Bilen var mycket ren och han körde sĂ€kert. Slottet var mycket fint och vi borde ha avsatt mer tid.
