Overview: car trip from Vilnius to Riga

Bound by both history and culture, Latvia and Lithuania are two countries that are so similar yet so different at the same time. It's no wonder they call each other brothers. Whether you are planning your first tour around the Baltic countries and then heading off to Tallinn, taking a further flight from Riga's airport, or just visiting your neighboring country, Riga is worth a stay. As you travel from Vilnius to Riga, be prepared for a unique experience filled with architecture rich in different styles, simple yet lush nature, and much more.

Make the most of your trip to Riga by exploring the best stops along the way as you drive through roads surrounded by forests and meadows. A car service like Daytrip can ensure you don’t miss out on must-see sightseeing spots, such as the famous Island Castle in Trakai, located just west of Vilnius, the picturesque Old Town of Panevezys, or the medieval Bauska Castle, which has overlooked the region since the 16th century.

About Riga

Despite Riga being the biggest capital city in the Baltic states, it is often eclipsed by either Tallinn or Vilnius. It is a city rich in history that has endured hard times but has always kept its feet on the ground despite everything.

A brief history of Riga

Riga's history dates back to medieval times. Although German bishop Albert von Buxhoevden officially founded the town in 1201, the area was already long inhabited. The town remained under German control until the bishop died in 1229.

From 1621, Riga and Vidzeme region was under the rule of King Gustav II Adolf, becoming the largest city in the Swedish Empire. But in 1710, during the Great Northern War (1700-1721), Russia took over Riga and Swedish Vidzeme, becoming the third largest city in the Russian empire after Moscow and St. Petersburg.

While under Russian rule, Riga experienced economic and cultural growth. The influence of Russian architecture blended with Germanic styles, creating a unique architectural landscape that can still be appreciated. Latvians added a spark to their culture by holding the first National Song Festival in 1873, which is still organized every 5 years. It was a big step in forming Latvia’s identity and a way to unite the nation as Latvians fought for independence.

After World War I, Latvia finally declared its independence in 1918 but was again occupied by the Soviets and Germany during World War II. Latvia regained its independence in 1991 and joined the European Union in May 2004.

From Vilnius to Riga: travel tips

Although the trip from Vilnius to Riga is relatively short, it is always good to be prepared before entering a new country. Here are a few tips to ensure your experience is as smooth as possible.

Do not hesitate to approach the locals

Latvians are known for being somewhat reserved, but this does not mean they are unapproachable. They open up over time and will still be happy to help you if you are looking for help or directions.

Learn some basic Latvian phrases

Most of the younger generation speaks English, so language should not be a barrier when visiting Riga. Half of Riga’s population are native Latvian speakers, while the other half are Russian speakers. Latvians appreciate it when foreigners make an effort to learn at least a few words in Latvian, as the local language is not as popular anywhere else. Here are some basic phrases that might come in handy:

  • Sveiki! (Hello!)
  • Paldies! (Thank you!)
  • Lūdzu (Please / You are welcome)
  • Uz redzēšanos! (Goodbye!)

The latter might be a bit tricky to pronounce, so you can also say atā, although it’s a rather informal way to say goodbye. Nevertheless, we assure you will make any Latvian smile if you learn any of these phrases, no matter the pronunciation!

Have a few euros in your pocket

Although Latvia is not known for tipping, it will always be appreciated if you truly enjoy the service at a restaurant or cafe. There is no strict tipping policy, but people in Latvia usually add a few euros to round up the bill. However, do not feel obligated to tip, as it is just another way to say thanks for a great meal or service.

How to get from Vilnius to Riga

To make sure your Vilnius to Riga transfer is as smooth as possible, here you will find the best ways to visit Riga, located along the Baltic Sea.

From Vilnius to Riga by bus

One of the cheapest options to go from Vilnius to Riga is by taking a bus. Several bus companies will take you to Latvia’s capital city; here are two of the most common ones:

  • LuxExpress: If you buy in advance, you can purchase tickets for as low as $15 (€14). This company offers comfortable buses and a relatively shorter travel time, as LuxExpress makes fewer stops along the way. You will be in Riga in just over four hours. Some of the amenities include WiFi, USB ports, a restroom, and warm drinks.
  • Flixbus: Tickets start at $14 (€13), and you will arrive at your destination within approximately the same timeframe. Amenities include WiFi and USB ports.
  • Ecolines: this is the cheapest of the buses, as you can find tickets starting from $7.50 (€7), and you will reach Riga in around 4 hours.

Make sure you check the schedule of each route on the bus company’s official website.

From Vilnius to Riga by train

If you are curious to try out the new train that goes from Vilnius to Riga, you will appreciate the convenience and comfort it offers. There are two trains per day; one will take you to Riga in the morning, and the second one will take you back to Vilnius in the evening. You can choose between first and second class, with tickets costing $37 (€34) and $26 (€24) respectively.

The train schedule is available on the LTG Link website. Keep in mind that the train will also take you to Riga in just around 4 hours, so if you are looking for an equally quick but cheaper option, you might want to opt for a bus.

From Vilnius to Riga by plane

For those who love the excitement of flying, there’s good news: you can also catch a flight from Vilnius Airport to Riga The flight is just 50 minutes long, but keep in mind that you have to be at the airport 2 hours before the scheduled departure, and there might be delays, which might result in a longer journey than expected.

From Vilnius to Riga by private car service

One of the best ways to reach Riga is by choosing a door-to-door car service, like Daytrip. Not only will it take you to your destination in just around 3 hours and 40 minutes (depending on weather and traffic conditions), but you will also be able to stop at some of the most charming stops before you reach Riga, such as Bauska Castle, which is not possible if you opt for any of the previously mentioned modes of transportation. Be prepared for green, nature-filled, and serene landmarks!

If you travel with Daytrip in summer, you will appreciate that the cars are equipped with air conditioning, which will ensure a highly comfortable journey even on the warmest days. Additionally, your local English-speaking driver will share the best recommendations so you do not miss out on the nicest restaurants or loveliest hidden spots either in Riga or during your journey.

Things to do when you get to Riga

Once you arrive from Vilnius to Riga, it is time to explore what the charming capital city of Latvia has to offer. Here are some recommendations of things to see or do that will make your stay unforgettable. Whether you explore the city on your own or go on tours, we assure you that Riga will not disappoint!

Let the Town Hall Square surprise you

We bet that you already have Riga’s Old Town in your itinerary but there are a few places that deserve a special mention. The Town Hall Square (Rātslaukums) is situated in the heart of the Old Town and holds a historical significance, as many important events took place there. It is believed that the world’s very first Christmas tree was decorated there back in 1510.

Despite the destruction of the original buildings during World War II, Rātslaukums has been restored since then, and nowadays, you can admire the surrounding architecture as you stroll along the cobblestone streets.

Taste the Latvian cuisine at the Central Market

If you are looking for a place to taste the Latvian cuisine, add the Central Market to your list of things to explore! As you wander through the biggest market in Europe, you will not only discover the taste of the Latvian cuisine but you will also learn more about the local culture. The Riga Central Market, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998, promises an authentic culinary adventure. For those who do not want to miss out on the best the Central Market has to offer, there are even tours that offer food tasting.

Admire Riga from above

St Peter’s Church will offer the best panoramic views of Riga, as it is the tallest church in the city. As you climb the tower, the city’s symbolic red rooftops will unfold. Although the entrance fee is around $10 (€9), it is undoubtedly worth it! The church is also known to be one of the oldest medieval architecture buildings in the Baltic States, so it adds to the value.

Go on a boat tour and explore the main landmarks

For those looking for a more romantic experience, we suggest going sightseeing on a boat as you weave through the Daugava River. Depending on your chosen tour, you will be able to admire landmarks such as the Freedom Monument, the Latvian National Opera, the National Library, and so much more!

When is the best time to visit Riga

Although it is hard to highlight just one season to visit Riga, one of the best times to visit this charming city is undoubtedly in summer, which lasts from June to August (temperatures around 75°F (24°C). During this time, you can enjoy the best of both worlds: the mesmerizing and serene nature, as well as the historical buildings without worrying about too cold weather.

However, if you are looking for a Christmas wonderland experience, December is the perfect time to visit. The entire city comes alive, the Christmas market welcomes people with its cozy atmosphere, and the twinkling decorations fill the streets with light. Be aware that the temperatures might fall below 34°F (1°C), so make sure you bring double-lined mittens and warm layers.

Daytrip
