Main attractions
- A colonial hill station in the Titiwangsa mountain range of peninsular Malaysia, sitting at 1,500 meters above sea level — the British developed it from 1925 as a retreat from the lowland heat, and the combination of cool air, rolling tea plantations, Tudor-style bungalows and strawberry farms gives it an atmosphere entirely unlike anywhere else in Malaysia
- The tea plantations are the defining landscape of the highlands — Boh Tea Estate, the largest in Southeast Asia, cascades across the hillsides in geometric rows of clipped bushes broken by processing factories whose corrugated roofs and colonial-era machinery have barely changed since the 1930s; the factory tour explains the full process from leaf to cup with free tastings at the end
- The Mossy Forest on the summit ridge of Gunung Brinchang (2,031 meters) is one of the most otherworldly natural environments in Malaysia — a cloud forest of gnarled, lichen-draped trees permanently shrouded in mist, draped in hanging moss and inhabited by pitcher plants, orchids and the rafflesia, the world's largest flower
Things to do
- Visit Boh Tea Estate for the factory tour and the clifftop café — the café terrace overhangs the valley with tea bushes falling away below and forest-covered peaks rising opposite; a pot of Boh tea here in the cool highland air is the defining Cameron Highlands experience
- Walk the Mossy Forest trail on Gunung Brinchang — the summit is reachable by road and the forest begins immediately at the car park; the trail is short but dense and the atmosphere of permanent cloud and dripping vegetation is unlike any other forest environment in the country
- Browse the market stalls along the main street in Tanah Rata for highland strawberries, honey, fresh vegetables grown in the valley farms and the local corn — the produce market is working rather than tourist-facing and the prices reflect it
What to eat
- Steamboat (hotpot) is the highland speciality — tables of fresh vegetables, tofu, fish balls and thinly sliced meat cooked at the table in a simmering broth; the cool air makes it the most appropriate meal in the highlands regardless of the time of day; Father's Guest House in Tanah Rata is an institution for budget steamboat; the Boh café is essential for tea and scones
