Swimming is possible at Nazare's main beach (Praia da Nazare) during summer months when the water is calmer. This wide, golden-sand beach is supervised by lifeguards from June to September. However, never attempt swimming at Praia do Norte (North Beach) where the giant waves occur, as it's extremely dangerous even for experienced surfers.
