Your professional Daytrip driver will meet you at your accommodation in Valletta and transport you safely to Birgu and then to Cospicua, allowing you to explore two of Malta's historic Three Cities showcasing medieval architecture and traditional harbor life.
Birgu (also known as Vittoriosa) sits just across the Grand Harbor from Valletta, approximately 2 miles (3 km) away by road. Cospicua is immediately adjacent to Birgu, so both can be explored within the same compact area known as the Three Cities. The short drive from Valletta takes around 10 to 15 minutes, making this an easy and rewarding half-day excursion.
Birgu's historic core has uneven cobblestone streets and some narrow lanes that can be challenging for wheelchairs or strollers. Fort St. Angelo has steps throughout, and much of the old town involves walking on irregular surfaces. The Birgu Waterfront promenade is more accessible and offers a scenic alternative. If you have specific mobility concerns, it's worth planning your route through flatter areas and allowing extra time.
Birgu's highlights include Fort St. Angelo, a medieval fortress offering panoramic views of the Grand Harbour, the Inquisitor's Palace, which served as the seat of the Holy Roman Inquisition for over 200 years, and the scenic Birgu Waterfront with its waterside cafes and harbor views. The Maritime Museum is also located nearby for those interested in Malta's seafaring history. Most sights are within walking distance of each other.
The waterfront areas in Birgu offer excellent fresh seafood and traditional Maltese cuisine. Look for Stuffat tal-Fenek (rabbit stew), which is considered Malta's national dish, and Pastizzi, small flaky pastries filled with ricotta or mushy peas. Birgu Waterfront restaurants also serve hearty sandwiches made on traditional Maltese bread, known as hobz biz-zejt, which make for a great casual lunch with harbor views.
Birgu is one of Malta's oldest inhabited cities and served as the headquarters of the Knights of St John from 1530, before Valletta was even built. It was also the site of the Great Siege of 1565, when Ottoman forces were repelled by the Knights and Maltese defenders. Today, its narrow streets, fortified waterfront, and well-preserved palaces make it one of the most atmospheric places to explore on the island.
Cospicua, also known as Bormla, is the largest of Malta's Three Cities and is most famous for its remarkable 17th-century fortification walls, the Cottonera Lines, and the Firenzuola Fortifications. While Birgu has a more intimate, cobbled-lane character, Cospicua feels more like a working harbor town. The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, which survived World War II largely intact, is worth a visit for its art collection and impressive altar.
The most spectacular Grand Harbor views are from Fort St. Angelo's upper levels and from the Birgu Waterfront promenade. Sunrise and the golden hour before sunset produce the most dramatic light, with Valletta's baroque skyline reflected across the water. A short walk along the fortification walls also reveals sweeping views. Visiting on a weekday morning tends to be quieter and more rewarding than weekends.
