Popeye Village is located in Anchor Bay in the northwest of Malta, approximately 13 miles (21 km) from Valletta, a drive of roughly 30 to 35 minutes. Mgarr village is nearby in the same northwestern area of the island. The scenic coastal road to this part of Malta makes the journey itself an enjoyable part of the trip.
Popeye Village can be enjoyable for visitors interested in film history and quirky attractions. The attraction includes a small museum with original Popeye movie props and costumes, a boat ride around the bay, and access to a sheltered beach area for swimming. The colorful set architecture against the rocky bay is genuinely photogenic. That said, the experience is clearly designed with families in mind, so expectations should be set accordingly.
Mgarr is a traditional Maltese fishing village on the northwestern coast, known for its picturesque harbor filled with colorful traditional boats called luzzu. The narrow streets and preserved village homes offer a look at everyday Maltese rural life far removed from the tourist areas. The nearby Mgarr ix-Xini inlet is a beautiful cove for swimming, with crystal-clear water, natural cave formations, and a historic watchtower built in 1661.
Popeye Village was originally constructed as the film set for the 1980 Robert Altman movie Popeye, starring Robin Williams. After filming ended, it was preserved and transformed into a family attraction. The colorful wooden buildings are set in a sheltered bay and are genuinely charming. While it is primarily a family destination with costumed characters, boat rides, and playgrounds, the film history angle and the scenic coastal setting make it enjoyable for adults too.
Visiting on a weekday morning, particularly outside of July and August, is the best way to enjoy Popeye Village without large crowds. The attraction can get very busy on summer weekends and public holidays. Opening earlier in the day also means you have more time at Mgarr afterward. Mgarr ix-Xini is a natural cove without lifeguards or beach facilities, so come prepared. Bring sun protection, a towel, water, and snacks. Water shoes are useful as entry into the water is over rocks. The cove is sheltered and the water is calm on most days, making it suitable for swimming and snorkeling. It is quieter and less visited than Malta's main beach areas, which adds to its appeal.
