Overview: car trip from Salerno to Sorrento

A road trip from Salerno to Sorrento has as many winding roads as there are waves on the Amalfi Coast. If traveling in Italy teaches us one thing, it’s that the journey is just as exciting as the destination. With each new bend in the road, a new scene emerges of quaint village life, breathtaking ocean views, and rugged cliffs.

Along the way discover the haunting beauty of Pompeii, a city frozen in time. This unique piece of cultural heritage is easily accessible by car and conveniently on the route between Salerno and Sorrento. When you book through Daytrip, adding sightseeing stops is just a click away with suggested stop times and easy-to-calculate arrival times.

It takes a seasoned driver to navigate this route without getting distracted by the old-world charm or fumbling with a map of a foreign country on your phone, so hire a local private driver through Daytrip. It is the safest and easiest way to travel in this region. Welcome to Sorrento!

About Sorrento

A trip to the Amalfi Coast and the surrounding areas is not complete without a visit to Sorrento, a small city of about 16,000. Sorrento lies on the south side of the Bay of Naples on the Sorrentine Peninsula, one of the most beautiful regions in Italy, stretching from Salerno to Sorrento, up to Pompeii. Throughout the centuries, Sorrento has been influenced by various cultures, including the Byzantines and the Normans, before settling into its Italian identity.

Sorrento has been inhabited since ancient times with evidence of Greek settlement around the 6th century BC. It flourished during the Roman Empire, becoming a favored retreat for Roman aristocrats to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and the chaos within Rome’s political landscape. A lot has changed since ancient Roman times, but Sorrento remains a popular vacation destination for Italians and international travelers alike.

Visitors flock to Sorrento for its breathtaking landscapes, including the rugged coastline, lush gardens, and the majestic backdrop of Mount Vesuvius. The town serves as a gateway to the Amalfi Coast, making it an ideal base for exploring nearby attractions like Positano, Amalfi, and the enchanting island of Capri.

From Salerno to Sorrento: travel tips

Daytrip will handle all of the logistics for your Salerno to Sorrento transfer, but you still need to figure out what to pack! These handy packing tips will save you from a headache later!

### Don’t forget skin protection

If you are planning sightseeing stops at Pompeii or Villa di Poppea, have extra sun protection in your personal bag for easy access. Instead of digging through your luggage once you’ve arrived at the sites, you’ll have your hat, water bottle, and sunscreen all in one spot with you in the cabin.

### Pack your bags the night before Don’t leave this task to the last minute! On the evening before your trip, take a few minutes to organize your bags and lay out your outfit for the next day. If you’re going to Sorrento to spend the night, check the safes and closets of your hotel in Salerno in the evening to prevent leaving anything behind. ### Enjoy the ride The Amalfi Coast Drive between Salerno and Sorrento is one of the most scenic roads on the planet. Instead of cramming yourself into an overcrowded bus (and risking being on the wrong side of the view), take a private car transfer with Daytrip to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience to the fullest!

How to get from Salerno to Sorrento

You have many options for traveling from Salerno to Sorrento, as they are both major destinations in the Amalfi Coast region. However, the rugged terrain and slower pace of life that we love about this region add to the difficulty of traveling easily. While a few mass-transit options are available, driving is still the most efficient.

### Salerno to Sorrento with Daytrip

Your Italian getaway is not the time to take on the challenge of driving through narrow city streets and cliffside roads with a map in a foreign language. Instead, hire a local driver who knows the local rules and driving customs. Sit back and relax for this 1 hour and 10-minute journey and let the ever-changing scenery awaken your imagination.

Your driver will take you door-to-door for this transfer and will even take you to sightseeing stops that are easily booked online. With straightforward pricing, online booking, and calculated stop times, you’ll have all the excitement of a full-day itinerary without the hassle of researching it all yourself. This route starts at $27 per seat, so book today!

### Salerno to Sorrento by train There are no direct trains between Salerno and Sorrento, but for $22 you can take the train from Salerno to Naples and then transfer to a train going to Sorrento. Trenitalia is Italy’s national rail service, and they operate many trains between these three cities per day. The entire journey takes between 3- and 5-hours door-to-door. ### Salerno to Sorrento by ferry If you aren’t prone to seasickness, take the ferry from Salerno to Sorrento. It will cost $23 to $26 per person and take 2.5 to 3 hours. Ferries run several times per day from multiple companies but make alternative plans if you see dark clouds in the distance. Ferry service is suspended during high winds, rough waters, and storms. ### Salerno to Sorrento by bus SITA operates direct buses between Salerno and Sorrento. They leave once per hour seven days a week (between 5:00 AM and 10:00 PM) and require a transfer in Amalfi. Tickets are $4 and the trip takes 3 to 4 hours. However cheap this option may be, traveling this far by bus on Italian roads is not pleasant, especially when they’re packed to bursting in the summer!

Things to do when you get to Sorrento

At the Museo Correale di Terranova, you can discover a collection of Neapolitan art, antiques, and beautiful gardens in this small but charming museum. The Basilica di Sant'Antonino has stunning frescos and is dedicated to St. Anthony, Sorrento's patron saint. The Cloister of San Francesco was built in the 14th century and is known for its serene gardens and impressive architecture. It has a second floor with a museum exhibit detailing its construction and purpose for the Catholic faith. ### All aboard for Capri! Get your sea legs into a pair of capris and take the ferry to Capri! Known for its shopping and the famous Blue Grotto, Capri is absolutely worth the 20-minute ferry ride. Tickets do not need to be bought ahead of time, but on busy summer days, there may be a line at the pier. Check the departure times of the last ferry back to the mainland in the evening to avoid an impromptu overnight stay!
