Giethoorn
Fühlen Sie sich frei, in Ihrem eigenen Tempo zu erkunden und zu entdecken
Stopp: 3 h 30 Min - Eintritt nicht inbegriffen

Giethoorn was founded by peat farmers, who harvested the plant-stuff, and created a series of ponds, lakes, and canals in the process. Today, the settlement is often called ‘The Venice of Holland’ because of its series of canals and bridges. However, this isn’t a bustling city, but a charming village where visitors can ride through the canals, under traditional wooden bridges to admire the 18th and 19th century farm houses. For foodies, the town also has a gift for gastronomy, with a slew of excellent water-facing restaurants, including De Lindenhof, which has 2 Michelin stars.

Zwolle
Fühlen Sie sich frei, in Ihrem eigenen Tempo zu erkunden und zu entdecken
Stopp: 3 Stunden - Eintritt nicht inbegriffen

Zwolle is a medieval marvel that sits at the convergence of four rivers. It distills the Dutch essence into one compact, walkable city. Dominated by the 15th-century Sassenpoort, a UNESCO-listed castle-like gate, Zwolle’s cobbled streets remind visitors of a long-gone era. Climb the Peperbus, a 75-meter tower with dizzying spiral stairs, for panoramic views, or lose yourself in Waanders in de Broeren, a breathtaking bookstore housed in a Gothic cathedral (complete with original pipe organ!). Art lovers can’t miss Museum de Fundatie, crowned by a surreal glass egg atop its neoclassical dome, showcasing everything from Old Masters to avant-garde installations. Just an hour from Amsterdam, Zwolle offers authentic Dutch charm without the crowds.

Know more about your day trip
Giethoorn is a car-free village often called "Venice of the Netherlands," featuring over 180 small bridges connecting homes that stand on tiny islands. This picturesque settlement is known for its thatched-roof farmhouses from the 18th century, pristine canals, and tranquil atmosphere. Your 3.5-hour visit allows time to experience its unique transportation system of "whisper boats" (silent punter boats) and explore the waterside paths and gardens.
Renting an electric whisper boat (approximately €20-50 per hour) offers the quintessential Giethoorn experience, allowing you to navigate the canals at your own pace during your 3.5-hour visit. No license is required, and boats are easy to operate. Alternatively, join a guided boat tour (about €10 per person) for historical commentary. Walking the footpaths alongside canals is free and provides excellent photography opportunities of this unique village.
During your 3-hour Zwolle visit, explore the well-preserved medieval center with its star-shaped canal system and 15th-century city gate (Sassenpoort). Visit the Gothic Grote Kerk (Great Church) with its magnificent pipe organ and the Museum de Fundatie housed in a striking building with a unique cloud-shaped upper structure. Don't miss sampling local specialties like Zwolle mustard soup or visiting the Waanders in de Broeren bookstore located in a converted 15th-century Dominican church.
Giethoorn is approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) northeast of Amsterdam, with a driving time of about 1.5 hours. The route takes you through the scenic Dutch countryside and across the unique engineering marvel of the Houtribdijk, a 27-kilometer dam separating two large lakes. Your private Daytrip driver handles the navigation, allowing you to enjoy the changing landscapes from urban Amsterdam to rural Overijssel province.
Giethoorn has become increasingly popular, particularly with tour groups during summer months. For a more peaceful experience, weekday visits are preferable to weekends. April, May, September, and October offer pleasant weather with fewer crowds. Your driver can time your arrival to avoid peak hours. Early morning or late afternoon visits provide the best lighting for photography and a more authentic village atmosphere.
Giethoorn offers several canalside restaurants serving Dutch pancakes, local fish, and international cuisine with scenic views. For quick meals, try local specialties like poffertjes (mini pancakes) or stroopwafels from small cafes. Zwolle boasts more sophisticated dining options, including Michelin-starred restaurants and historic eateries in the city center. Ask your driver for recommendations based on your preferences and timing between destinations.
While most picturesque during spring and summer, this trip offers unique experiences year-round. Winter visits to Giethoorn are magical when occasional snow dusts the thatched roofs, though boat rentals may be limited. Zwolle's compact center is enjoyable in any weather, with excellent museums and indoor attractions. During December, both destinations feature charming Christmas decorations and markets. Daylight hours are shorter in winter, so an early start is recommended.
