The palace is notable for being built entirely from wood without using a single nail, a remarkable feat of traditional Malay craftsmanship. Kuala Kangsar is about 27 miles (43 km) from Ipoh, and the drive takes roughly 35 to 45 minutes via the E1 expressway. The route passes through pleasant countryside and small towns. Adding Taiping to the itinerary extends the journey by another 25 miles (40 km) northwest, adding approximately 30 to 40 minutes of driving time between the two towns.
Plan around two hours in Kuala Kangsar to visit the Ubudiah Mosque, Istana Kenangan, and the Galeri Sultan Azlan Shah at a relaxed pace. Taiping rewards a longer visit of three to four hours if you include the Lake Gardens, the Perak Museum, and a stroll through the heritage town center. Starting early from Ipoh will give you a full and comfortable day without feeling rushed.
Visitors are welcome at the Ubudiah Royal Mosque, but modest dress is required. This means covered shoulders, arms, and legs for both men and women. The mosque is generally closed to non-worshippers during Friday prayers. It is free to enter, and the grounds offer excellent views of the golden domes from various angles, including across the Perak River.
Kuala Kangsar is Perak's royal town, home to the golden-domed Ubudiah Royal Mosque, the wood-and-no-nails Istana Kenangan (now the Perak Royal Museum), and the Galeri Sultan Azlan Shah. You can also spot Malaysia's oldest rubber tree near the district office. The town sits beside the Perak River and preserves a strong sense of Malay royal heritage, making it one of the most historically rich stops in the state.
Both towns have strong food cultures. In Kuala Kangsar, try local nasi lemak and riverside food stalls serving satay and cendol. Taiping is known for its Yong Tau Foo and char kway teow. Coffee lovers should not miss Antong Coffee Mill in Taiping, one of the oldest traditional coffee roasters in Malaysia, where you can see beans roasted the old-fashioned way and taste a fresh cup.
Perak has a tropical climate and receives rainfall throughout the year, though the driest months tend to be between June and August. Mornings are generally cooler and more comfortable for outdoor sightseeing, especially at Taiping Lake Gardens. Avoiding Malaysian school and public holidays will help you enjoy a less crowded experience at the popular sites in both towns.
Taiping is one of Malaysia's most underrated heritage towns. The Taiping Lake Gardens are the country's first public garden and a highlight, with century-old rain trees arching over a peaceful lake. The Perak Museum, Malaysia's oldest, and a well-preserved collection of colonial-era shophouses and civic buildings, round out a visit. Plan a half-day to do the town justice.
