This medieval Town of Art and History is known the world over for its brandy, but it also has plenty of picturesque monuments.
First mentioned in the 9th century, Cognac first made its fortunes trading salt before it developed its world-famous wine and brandy industries. Today, visitors can explore the old town of this Village of Art and History, enjoying the historic houses and monuments, such as the 12th century Saint-Léger church, the fortified Saint-Jacques gateway, or the noble Valois castle. This noble estate was the birthplace of François I, and now gives visitors a taste of Cognac history through its Renaissance rooms, and, of course, cellars full of the eponymous brandy. For a more detailed look at the city’s heritage, the Dupuy d'Angeac mansion exhibits local ceramics, artefacts, and artwork. For those with an unwavering dedication to the famous liquor, the Arts of Cognac museum showcases the brandy’s history and production process through everything from stills, to bottles and advertisements. And of course, it’s also possible to visit the city’s famous cognac houses, such as Hennessy and Rémy Martin.
