Switzerland
Over the course of five centuries, a small fortified church built on a hill-top was slowly transformed into one of the largest castles in Switzerland.
From the beginning of the 13th century, Mesocco Castle became the center of the alpine Valle Mesolcina, or Misox Valley. Among those who ruled this influential fortress are Baron Albert von Sax-Misox, the founder of the Grey League, as well as General Giacomo Trivulzio of Milan. Despite much distrust within the valley and many attempts to seize the castle, the fortifications proved impregnable and the castle was never conquered. Today, this sight is named a “Swiss heritage site of national significance” and is well-worth a stop. Visitors can admire the massive castle walls sprawled over the hill-top, connecting its five towers and housing what remains of the Church of St. Carpoforo at its heart. A short walk to the foot of the castle reveals the Church of Santa Maria de Castello, still adorned with a 15th century Romanesque fresco.
