- The peat store archways and collapsed flue walls of Old Gang are the structures most visible on screen; the surrounding moorland appears in the film's most exposed sequences

- The Farmer's Arms in the village is a simple, traditional Dales pub — good for a pre-walk coffee or a post-walk drink; food is straightforward and portions are generous

- Waterproof boots are essential — the gill path becomes boggy after rain and the moorland around Old Gang holds water year-round. Carry layers regardless of the morning forecast. Mobile signal is absent on the gill path — download maps before leaving Leeds.

Yes. Both villages are enjoyable without any serious hiking. Reeth's village green, museum, and pub are all easily accessible. Gunnerside is a pleasant place to wander even without heading up the gill. The moorland walk to Old Gang is available if you want it, but it is not required to get a strong sense of the landscape that defined Fennell's film.
There are no booking requirements for Reeth or Gunnerside as both are open villages with free access. If you plan to eat at the Black Bull in Reeth or the Farmer's Arms in Gunnerside, it is worth calling ahead, as both pubs have limited covers and can fill up on weekends. The Swaledale Museum does not require advance booking.
Reeth is about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Leeds, roughly a 1 hour 10 minute drive through the Yorkshire Dales. Gunnerside is a further 4 miles (6 km) up the valley, adding around 10 minutes. The final section of road through Swaledale is narrow and winding, so a local driver who knows the route makes the journey significantly easier.
The Swaledale Museum on Reeth's village green documents the dale's Norse settlement, farming traditions, and lead-mining heritage through maps, artifacts, and personal accounts. It is small but informative, and gives excellent context for the industrial ruins you will see further up the valley. It is also free to enter.
Late spring through early fall gives the best walking conditions and the widest range of daylight for exploring both villages and the moorland beyond. August brings heather in bloom on the higher moors, adding color to the landscape. Winter visits are possible and atmospheric, but the Dales weather can be challenging and some local pubs may have reduced hours.
Gunnerside is a small stone village with a genuine sense of remoteness. The Farmer's Arms pub is a good base for a coffee before the gill walk or a drink after. The village itself has the enclosed, self-contained atmosphere that runs through the film's domestic scenes, and walking the lanes and bridge over the Swale is pleasant in its own right, even without venturing up the gill.
Swaledale is widely considered the most dramatic and remote of the main Dales valleys. It is narrower and less visited than Wharfedale or Wensleydale, with a strong Norse heritage visible in its place names, drystone walls, field barns, and lead-mining ruins. The landscape has an austere, elemental quality that sets it apart from the more pastoral valleys to the south.
Emerald Fennell chose Swaledale as the primary landscape for her Wuthering Heights adaptation, with Reeth and Gunnerside providing the film's moorland world. The broad green at Reeth and the views west toward Gunnerside appear in establishing shots across the film. Gunnerside itself features in domestic scenes, while the gill path leading north from the village reaches Old Gang Smelting Mill, the film's most recognizable industrial location.
