Punta Arenas is the capital of Chilean Patagonia and one of the southernmost cities in the world, set on the Strait of Magellan where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans meet. It is known as the main gateway to Torres del Paine National Park, the departure point for Antarctic expeditions, and one of the best places in Patagonia to see Magellanic penguin colonies.

Plaza Munoz Gamero, the elegant central square anchored by a monument to Ferdinand Magellan, is the essential starting point. The Sara Braun Mansion (now a heritage museum and restaurant) is a beautifully preserved late 19th-century Patagonian grande dame. The Costanera del Estrecho seafront promenade offers sweeping views of the Strait of Magellan.

Chile uses the Chilean peso (CLP). Credit cards are accepted at most hotels and restaurants. Cash is useful at local markets and smaller vendors. Withdraw cash in Punta Arenas before heading deeper into Patagonia, where banking facilities are very limited.

Spanish is the official language. English is spoken at hotels, tour operators, and some restaurants in Punta Arenas, which handles a high volume of international adventure travelers and expedition guests. Outside these settings, Spanish is predominant.

October through April (austral spring and summer) is the most comfortable time, with milder temperatures and longer days for exploring the national park and penguin colonies. November and March are excellent sweet spots with fewer crowds than the peak January and February months. Patagonian weather is notoriously unpredictable year-round, so always layer up.

Centolla (king crab) freshly pulled from the Strait of Magellan is the unmissable local delicacy. Cordero magallanico (slow-roasted Patagonian lamb) is another regional treasure. Cazuela de mariscos (shellfish stew) is warming after a cold coastal walk. Local craft beers, particularly from Cerveceria Austral, are excellent. The city's Croatian immigrant heritage is also reflected in its excellent restaurants.

The city center and waterfront are walkable. Taxis are widely available for getting between neighborhoods.
