Wartburg castle

Wartburg Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose most famous resident was the reformist Martin Luther, a seminal figure in the sixteenth-century Reformation.

Sobre

The castle perches over 1,300 feet above beautiful countryside and from the battlements are sheer drops with spectacular views of the surrounding forest and town of Eisenach. Wartburg’s main claim to fame is that it was on this exact spot that Luther translated the bible into German, and gave the scriptures to the people. His study still remains intact today and can be viewed in one of the buildings close to the cozy courtyard. The remaining castle interiors in the Residence of the Counts at the rear of the castle are dazzling, with the structure of the rooms, although restored, still unchanged from the Middle Ages. Around 1900, the walls were decorated with mosaic tiles, paintings and tapestries with a magical effect that sets Wartburg’s interiors apart from many others. It will come as no surprise that due to its history, Wartburg is considered to be high among those castles most loved by the Germans themselves.
