Mycenae has a small selection of cafes and tavernas near the site entrance, ideal for a light snack or coffee before or after your visit. Nafplio offers a much wider choice, with excellent waterfront restaurants, traditional Greek tavernas in the Old Town, and well-known local specialties such as grilled fish, fresh seafood, and loukoumades (Greek doughnuts).
You have two options: the famous climb of 999 stone steps from the lower town, or taking a vehicle up to the upper entrance. The climb is steep and can be tiring, especially in summer heat, but the views on the way up are spectacular. If you prefer to drive, your Daytrip driver can drop you at the upper entrance. Fortress admission is approximately 20 EUR, and hours vary by season.
Mycenae is approximately 75 miles (121 km) from Piraeus, with a drive of around 1 hour and 30 minutes in normal traffic. Nafplio is about 85 miles (137 km) from Piraeus, roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes by car. The two sites are only about 13 miles (21 km) apart from each other, making them an ideal combination to visit in one day.
Yes, with a little planning. Mycenae involves walking on uneven ancient paths, and the Palamidi Fortress steps can be demanding. However, children often love the drama of the Mycenae citadel, and Nafplio's Old Town is very walkable and family-friendly. Older travelers or those with mobility concerns may want to skip the Palamidi steps and explore the Old Town and harbor area instead.
Mycenae is most famous for the monumental Lion Gate, one of the oldest relief sculptures in Europe. Other highlights include the imposing stone walls of the citadel, the Treasury of Atreus (the royal tomb of the legendary King Agamemnon), and the on-site museum displaying Bronze Age artifacts. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important Bronze Age ruins in the world.
Nafplio is one of Greece's most charming coastal towns and Greece's first modern capital. Key highlights include the Palamidi Fortress, a formidable Venetian-era structure atop a hill with sweeping views (accessible via 999 steps or by road); the picturesque Bourtzi Castle on a small harbor islet; the atmospheric Old Town with Venetian architecture and lively cafes; and the nearby Arvanitia Beach.
