About Split

In the area of Split, it is known that there were Greek settlements around the 3rd or 2nd century. However, the city's foundation is considered to be from the late 3rd and early 4th century when the Roman emperor Diocletian built his palace. Today, Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site remains the historic heart of the city.

Split, which is the second largest city in Croatia, has a long and rich history, which is even reflected in its name. Originally, Split was named Spalatum by the Romans. During the Middle Ages, the name changed to Spalatro, and the Italians called it Spalato. In the 19th century, the city was known as Spljet, before it was eventually given its modern-day name we know today.

This mesmerizing coastal city is also renowned for being home to the most Olympic winners per capita in the world. Split’s athletes have won around 100 Olympic medals in 11 different sports. While no one knows what is behind Split’s success in sports, it is believed that the locals of Split are just naturally talented. And maybe the special Mediterranean spirit you can feel even when you are just a visitor adds to it.

Split is the ideal city for your perfect coastal getaway, where you can not only relax on its fine-sand beaches but also explore the city’s rich historical heritage by visiting the ancient landmarks and museums that tell the stories from the past. Learn about the Spilt’s culture by tasting the Dalmatian cuisine and discover the nearby islands for an authentic Adriatic experience.

Although there are restaurants and cafes, you might want to bring snacks if you travel in the off-season, as they might be closed.

Taste the Dalmatian cuisine

No trip to Split is complete without trying the Dalmatian culinary delights. Here are three dishes that you must add to your menu:

  • Peka: it is not only the name of the dish but also of the lid that is put on the bowl and gives this dish a specific flavor. It is made of slow-cooked meat (for example, lamb, chicken, or octopus) along with vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, and bell peppers.
  • Pašticada: a slow-cooked beef dish with a sweet and sour sauce.
  • Crni rižot: a black risotto that is prepared with squid ink (hence the name and color). A must for seafood lovers!

When is the best time to visit Split

Like most places in Europe, the shoulder seasons of spring or fall are the best time to visit Split. The weather is perfectly pleasant, there are way fewer crowds, and the prices are lower. May and September are the ideal months for outdoor activities, as the temperatures are mild and the summer heat won’t overwhelm you.

Summer (June to August) is peak season, but if you are mainly looking for a perfect summer vacation, then you might prefer to visit Split from June to August. Be aware that it is also the most crowded period, so expect packed beaches and higher costs for accommodation and other expenses.

Dubrovnik to Split with a stop in Bosnia

It was great!! Driving through the country really was a wonderful way to see everything. Nikica was kind, efficient, patient, and encouraged us to enjoy the trip and not rush. We have zero complaints and would absolutely book again.

Great way to transfer and see sights along the way!

The trip from Dubrovnik to Split was excellent! A relaxing way to get to Split and see some sights along the way without being rushed. Thank you for giving us a female driver, Tatjiana was lovely as a person and a safe, great driver. She engaged us in conversation and was knowledgeable about the area. And she also helped get our passports stamped at the Bosnia Herzegovina border. The stop along the way choices were good and interesting. I think an hour in Ston is a good amount, 30 minutes not enough. The Rizman Winery was a great stop for wine tasting and lunch and view! (need to book the experience directly with the winery) Mostar was also interesting and great for a coffee break. There are activities to do on the river (separate from DayTrip) which we didn't know about, so definitely do some research and check out those options if it's a hot day.
