About Naples

Naples is the third-largest city in Italy and one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban areas in the world. It's cultured and opulent, it's also gritty and chaotic, and although it's exuberant and exciting, it's also peaceful and understated.

Naples a centerpiece of Italian culture, with illustrious art, unforgettable literature, near indescribable architecture, lively music and theater, and friendly residents. But how did this city become the spectacular place it is today? The answer: a long history. Naples was founded in the 8th century BC by the Cumaeans, and was one of the most important Greek colonies before it was conquered by the Romans in 326 BC.

In the Middle Ages, the Duchy of Naples was an independent state until the Normans invaded in 1139. After Angevia seized the city in 1266 it became the Kingdom of Naples in 1282, after which Naples became one of Europe's most influential cultural centers.

This seemingly endless succession of rulers shaped Naples into the vibrant city it is today.

From Rome to Naples: travel tips

Brace yourself for a delightful time filled with options and scenic wonders on the road from Rome to Naples! You have two main routes, each offering its unique flavor. Follow these travel tips to get the most out of your trip.

Plan in advance

Each mode of transportation from Rome to Naples offers a different experience. Whether you select the swift and speedy train, the budget-friendly flexibility of buses, or the luxurious comfort of a private transfer, decide how you're making the trip in advance.

Whatever route you take from the eternal city (Rome) to Napoli (Naples), be sure to pack well and be early – even if things run late. Vacations are always a little unpredictable, so it’s better to be safe than scattered.

Pizza pit stops

No road trip would be complete without immersing yourself in the local culture and cuisine. For pizza fanatics, you can even plan your road trip to stop at some of the best pizza joints along the way. Here are some of the most popular:

Pizza-shop-hopping is rewarding but it’s important to note that the traffic on the other hand can be a buzzkill, especially during peak hours. Since you'll probably want to wash your pizza down with local wine, hiring a private driver means you don't have to worry about navigating foreign streets and can enjoy your pizza adventure to the fullest.

Avoid rush hour

Rome has some of the worst traffic in the world, so time your departure to avoid the heavy congestion from 7:00-10:00 AM. And Naples, as the third-largest city in Italy, similarly sees heavy rush hour traffic, so expect to be slowed down if you’re arriving between 5:00-7:00 PM.

Stay updated on traffic conditions, consider alternate routes, and make the most of your time on the road. Leave early in the morning and you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the many sights on the road from Rome to Naples while still beating rush hour traffic.

Enrich your trip

When you book a private car with Daytrip, you’re opening the door to an unexpectedly enriching experience. Your English-speaking driver will be more than happy to share their local insights, give a history crash course, or tips on what to do in Naples. Daytrip also lets you stop for sightseeing, so you can visit places you'd miss with public transportation.

How to get from Rome to Naples

Need help deciding how to get from Rome to Naples? Here’s the breakdown of your options:

Rome to Naples by train

Taking the train is the fastest and easiest way to reach Naples from Rome, especially with the high-speed Frecciarossa train. The journey takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes, with ticket prices ranging from $15 to $77 USD. Departing from Rome Termini and arriving at Naples Centrale the train offers modern amenities like air conditioning, electrical outlets, Wi-Fi, a cafe car, and a food cart. However, it can be crowded and expensive, particularly during peak hours.

Rome to Naples by bus

For a more economical and flexible choice, buses are plentiful, with prices ranging from $4 to $20 USD. The journey takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes, depending on traffic and stops. Departing from Rome Tiburtina and arriving at Naples Piazza Garibaldi, both near the city center, buses provide amenities like air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and reclining seats. Yet, they can be slow and uncomfortable, especially in adverse conditions.

Rome to Naples by private car transfer with Daytrip

That’s us – comfortable, convenient & clean cruising! Book a car with an English-speaking local driver for a more luxurious and personalized experience. The 80-minute ride comes with door-to-door service, luggage assistance, and air conditioning, allowing you to relax and be fully present during your trip. Even better, you can stop for sightseeing to enrich your trip even more! All cars are pet-friendly, come with child seats, and are smoke-free. And with prices as low as $74 per person, it can be cheaper than the train when traveling with a group!

Rome to Naples by rental car

Driving yourself sounds like a good idea at first. You get the flexibility to make pit stops or explore off-the-beaten-path destinations on your own time. But think about this: Rome has some of the worst traffic in the world, and Naples isn't far behind it. Navigating congested foreign streets where you don't know the rules of the road adds unnecessary stress to your vacation.

Rome to Naples by plane

Departing directly from Rome Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO) and arriving at Naples International Airport (NAP), direct flights take about 50 minutes, with ticket prices from $97 to $230 USD. While you’ll cover the distance fast, it doesn't take into account all the extra waiting.

Along with having to get to and from the airport, you need 1.5-2 hours for check-in, security, and boarding, waiting to get off the plane, waiting for your luggage, and waiting some more to exit the airport after your luggage arrives. Expect the total flying experience to be more like 4 hours.

Things to do when you get to Naples

After your trip from Rome, you’ll be hungry to start exploring the home of pizza. Here are some of the best things to do when you get to Naples.

Go palace hunting around Piazza del Plebiscito

Start your visit at Piazza del Plebiscito, Naples’ main square. This huge space is surrounded by multiple palaces, including the Royal Palace, Palazzo Salerno, and Prefecture Palace, and the Basilica Royal. Then set off in search of more opulent palaces and historic churches like the Naples Cathedral or the Sam Domenico Maggiore.

Gesù Nuovo

On the western side of Naple, the Gesu Nuova church is one of the most unique in the city. The unforgettable Brutalist-Baroque facade belies an opulent interior fit for royalty. Which checks out since the church was originally a palace built for Roberto Sanseverino, Prince of Salerno, in 1470.

Along with admiring the distinctive architecture, you can also learn about local saint Dr. Giuseppe Moscati, who dedicated his incredibly long-lived career to healing the poor in the 19th century.

Fontanelle Cemetery

Hidden beneath the streets of Naples, the Fontanelle Cemetery is in an old quarry that has existed since the 17th century. Some 250,000 plague victims are interred here, their bones piled out in the open. While the sight might scare you at first, there’s a strong tradition of caring for these lost souls. You might glimpse someone tending to their designated skeleton while you learn more about this practice.

Pizza at Via dei Tribunali

Naples prides itself as the “birthplace of pizza”, so the city is a mecca for pie lovers. Pizzerias battle for the title of the best, and the competition is fierce. The Via dei Tribunali is home to some of the top contenders, so come with an empty stomach to fill up on signature fluffy charred dough pizza.

San Carlo Theatre

Catch a world-class opera, concert, or ballet at the San Carlo Theatre. If you don’t have a preference, it doesn’t matter - just see something. The opulent interiors and frescoed ceilings in one of the oldest in Europe deserve a standing ovation. Or, at the very least, take a look at the the state-of-the-art museum, which features an immersive 3D gallery and contemporary exhibitions.

Great driver in Egypt

Used the service to go from Luxor to Hurghada, Egypt. Ahmed H was our driver and he was perfect. The car was new, clean, he had water and snacks for us, and accommodated our stops. Great service from him and would recommend it.

Professional and friendly service

We used DayTrip to transfer from Rome to Naples and back again. Our group of 5 had mobility issues, so using the train was not a good option. The drivers were both friendly and accommodating despite traffic difficulties and a delayed incoming flight. Highly recommended.

Getting around Italy

I recently spent 3 weeks in Italy as a single traveler and used Daytrip as a car service three times. First from Rome airport to my hotel in Riccione; then from Rome airport to Sorrento with a stop along the way for a tour of Pompeii; then from Naples to Rome airport hotel on the end. All 3 of my drivers were courteous, friendly, very professional and spoke English well. The took care of my luggage and met me on time and I felt very pampered in their clean vans! I highly recommend this service if you want convenient, timely and comfortable transport while traveling. Thanks Stephan, Sergio and Antonio!

Naples to Rome with too much luggage

My friend and I were scheduled to ride the train from Naples to Rome but had more luggage than we wanted to manage on a train. We were heading there on our last leg of a 2 week trip and had to pack for different weather. We booked with Daytrip just a few days before the travel date. They were quick to respond and I found their prices reasonable. I had looked at another one that wanted 3 times the same amount for the trip. Claudio was our driver and he was very prompt, courteous and knowledgeable of our journey. Overall he was awesome. We would definitely use Daytrip again!
