About La Paz

La Paz: the pearl of Mexico
Spanish Conquistadors, led by Hernan Cortes, made contact with the Guaycura _in the 1530s when their boats came ashore off of the Gulf of California. The Spanish took note of the large pearls used for jewelry and decorations by the _Guaycura and tried to violently take control of the area.
For about 50 years, the Spanish and native populations fought for control of natural resources until the Spanish succeeded in stripping the shore of most of the oysters for their pearls and forever altering the map of Latin America.
La Paz didn’t become a major city until 1829, when it became the capital of the state of Baja California Sur. Mining, agriculture, fishing, and, of course, pearls, were major industries that led to La Paz’s growth as the largest city in Baja California Sur.

Today, La Paz has 250,000 residents and an international airport (LAP), making it a popular arrival and departure point for the many resort towns in the area. Balandra Beach
Balandra Beach is a protected area known for its striking blue waters and mushroom-shaped rock formation. Only 450 people can visit Balandra Beach daily to preserve its delicate shoreline. Cerro de la Calavera, or “Skull Hill,” has trails to natural rock formations, arches, and caves along the cliff’s edges that have been carved out by time. The trail is ranked “moderate” for most hikers, but you can’t beat the views at sunset!
When is the best time to visit La Paz
Like most of the tropics, La Paz has two seasons: dry and rainy. The dry season, running from November through April, is the most popular time to visit La Paz. During these months, you can expect abundant sunshine, warm temperatures, and minimal rainfall, making it the perfect time to bask on sandy beaches and enjoy outdoor activities.
May to October are the rainy season months, with heavy rainfall and storms. We recommend not visiting during this time to prevent cancellations of outdoor excursions and flights.
