Albania
This family-run winery is leading the national wine-making revival after the communist government killed the industry.
The UNESCO-listed region of Berat is home to one of the world’s oldest wine-making traditions, which has been preserved by the dedicated Cobo Winery. Though established in the 1900s, Cobo went on a decades-long hiatus when the Communist government halted wine-making in Albania. In the 1990s, it came back, stronger than ever, leading the charge for a Renaissance of local wine making. Today, visitors can schedule a guided tour of the facilities to learn about the region’s wine-making history as well as Cobo’s wine-production process, culminating in a tasting of the final product.
