Bosnia and Herzegovina
Built as part of Bosnia’s effort to expel the Ottomans, the pragmatic Gradacac fort is a preserved example of traditional Bosnian architecture.
Started in 1765, Gradačac’s signature castle wasn’t fully realized until the 19th century when Husein Kapetan Gradaščević, the ‘Dragon of Bosnia, built it as part of his effort to free Bosnia from Ottoman rule, took over the captaincy. Along with the main castle and its 18 meter-high walls, there’s also a 22 meter tall watchtower. Today, much of the castle is surrounded by a park, and visitors can still see the sturdy lower bastions, a fine mosque, and precariously leaning stone tower near the partially carved entry gate. Within the larger central keep, visitors can tuck into local fare in the popular restaurant.
