This imposing fortress was one of the mightiest in Eastern Europe, fending off a force of 250,000 Turks.
King Daniel Galitsky ordered the construction of Khotyn fortress in the second half of the 13th century. By the 15th century, the fortress’ walls stood up to 40m high and 6m thick, standing as one of the strongest fortifications in Eastern Europe. The defenses proved their worth in 1621 when the Polish and 40,000 Cossacks defeated a force of 250,000 Turkish aggressors, though it would finally fall in 1711. Today, the massive castle has been renovated and is now one of the finest in the country. Visitors can walk the ramparts, and explore the towers and bastions. Within the fortress buildings, you’ll find a variety of exhibitions, from medieval torture and execution instruments, to military equipment, and artefacts found during excavations at the castle.
