Ireland
These stunning caverns might never have been found had it not been for a fortunate crowbar accident.
Mitchelstown Cave was discovered in 1833 when Michael Condon dropped his crowbar into a crevice, and found himself looking into an underground cavern when he went to retrieve it. After being explored and mapped by eminent naturalists and speleologists, the caves were opened to the public, and today are one of the natural wonders of Ireland. A guided tour leads visitors through three massive caverns where you’ll be treated to delicate calcite curtains, sparkling crystals, stalactites and stalagmites, and one of Europe’s finest calcite columns - the huge Tower of Babel.
