Bosnia and Herzegovina
The largest cave in Bosnia, this tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site is like another world, filled with unique creatures and fascinating formations.
World renowned since the days of Rome, the cave system was first described by Pliny the Elder in the 1st century. Since then it has attracted scientists and explorers, who have explored 7 kilometers, and believe it runs all the way to the Adriatic, though the remaining 15-20 kilometers is blocked by a cave-in. Among the many cave formations, such as stalactites, flowstones, draperies, and cascades are over 200 different animal species, including around 90 troglobites. One of the most bio-diverse caves in the world, the remains of eight fossilised animals have also been found, including a now-extinct leopard. The cave’s name, literally ‘wind cave’, stems from the strong breeze the cave can produce. Coupled with the constant 11 Celsius temperature visitors are advised to wear a jacket or sweater. Equipped with a hard-hat and headlamp, a guide brings visitors through an unforgettable 600 meters.
