The Nazare Lighthouse and adjacent Forte de Sao Miguel Arcanjo offer the prime viewing spot for the massive waves at Praia do Norte. The giant waves typically occur between October and March when specific swell conditions combine with the underwater Nazare Canyon. During your day tour, climb to the red lighthouse platform for panoramic views of the coastline.
This day tour allocates 2.5 hours for Obidos and 3 hours for Nazare. This timing allows you to explore Obidos' compact medieval center, including a walk along the ancient walls, before continuing to Nazare for both beach and clifftop experiences. Your driver, who is also your guide, will manage the approximately 1-hour journey between the two destinations, ensuring you have maximum touring time at both locations.
In Obidos, sample ginjinha (cherry liqueur) served in chocolate cups and traditional sweets like pao de lo (sponge cake). Nazare offers exceptional seafood, particularly caldeirada a Nazarena (fish stew), grilled sardines, and shellfish rice. The beachfront restaurants display fresh catches, while the upper town (Sitio) provides more traditional Portuguese cuisine with spectacular views. Obidos has a fascinating royal history as the traditional wedding gift from Portuguese kings to their queens, starting when King Dinis presented the town to Queen Isabel in 1282. This tradition continued for centuries, with the queens making architectural improvements that you'll notice during your visit. The castle, churches, and many buildings bear the influences of various queens who controlled the town, creating a unique royal heritage that distinguishes Obidos from other medieval towns in Portugal.
Swimming is possible at Nazare's main beach (Praia da Nazare) during summer months when the water is calmer. This wide, golden-sand beach is supervised by lifeguards from June to September. However, never attempt swimming at Praia do Norte (North Beach) where the giant waves occur, as it's extremely dangerous even for experienced surfers. If beach time is important during your tour, ask your driver-guide about the current conditions and safety recommendations.
Spring (April-June) and fall (September-October) offer ideal conditions with pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds for both destinations. Summer provides reliable beach weather in Nazare but brings more tourists to both locations.
