Cape Coast Castle — another UNESCO-listed slave fort and perhaps the most visited of Ghana's "Door of No Return" sites — sits approximately 15 km (9 miles) east of Elmina Castle. The two are close enough to visit on the same day, and together they offer a fuller, more complete picture of the region's history. Elmina Castle, being older and formerly Portuguese and then Dutch-controlled, has a distinct character from the British-administered Cape Coast Castle. Many travelers find that visiting both deepens the experience considerably rather than diluting it.
Elmina is approximately 165 km (103 miles) west of Accra along Ghana's coast.
