Kenya
Africa’s most photographed house is a treasure-trove of art and artefacts.
The African Heritage House is the product of American designer Alan Donovan, who arrived in Africa on a relief mission in 1969. Fascinated by how the people of Kenya used everything available in their natural, harsh environment to produce goods, he began to collect (and create) objects such as jewellery and exhibit them. Having caught the attention of Joseph Murumbi, then-Vice President of Kenya, Donovan was inspired by his passion for retaining a non-westernized African culture. Together they agreed to form the Africa Heritage, which was born in 1972. The goal was to create a building reminiscent of pre-colonial Africa, evident from the traditional mud building architecture. The house overlooks Nairobi National Park and serves as a gallery and homestay accommodation. The interior is a traditional presentation of African art and craft and a truly fascinating insight into African culture. If you’re feeling peckish, breakfast, lunch and dinner are served on the rooftop or by the pool!
