The world’s largest opium producer is actually a pleasant historic city famed for its sausages and thermal spas.
The rocky outcrop above the city of Afyonkarahisar has been fortified since at least 1350 BC, and for much of its history has been a key part of its identity - Kara Hisar even means ‘Black Castle’. Under Ottoman rule, Afyon (literally ‘Opium’ in Turkish) became the Turkish center for opium production, and today is the world’s largest producer of pharmaceutical opium. While poppies are a major source of income, Afyonkarahisar is also famed for its thermal spas and mud treatments, so you’ll find plenty of ways to relax. Then there’s the town’s delightful Old Town, which is centered around the 13th century Ulu Cami mosque. The cobbled streets, lined with colorful Ottoman-era houses, lead to 800-step stairway to the Afyonkarahisar Castle. Those who endure the climb are rewarded with fantastic views of the city and surrounding landscape. As a reward, be sure to get some of the city’s famed spicy sausages (sucuk) and Turkish Delight made with clotted cream.
