Ajloun Castle

Built to hold off the Crusaders, this imposing hilltop castle offers some of the best views in Jordan.

About

Ajloun Castle was built at the end of the 12th century by one of Saladin’s generals, and further enlarged in 1214 by the Mamluks. Dominating the Jordan Valley and three wadis leading into it, the castle was an important part of a defensive chain against the Crusaders, though it was bested by the invading Mongols in 1260. Promptly rebuilt, the castle remained in use through the Ottoman era by both the military and local townsfolk until it was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1837. The imposing castle offers an interesting counterpoint to the Crusader Crusader Belvoir Fort on the Sea of Galilee, with a small museum presenting more detailed insights into its history, such as its use of pigeons to transmit messages to Cairo. While the stone halls are mostly empty, the views offered by its hilltop position are some of the best in the country.
