Iceland
The largest settlement in northern Iceland offers an authentic snapshot of local life.
While the area was originally settled by the Vikings in the 9th century, Akureyri wasn’t recognized as a permanent settlement until 1778. While the town took decades to grow from its original population of 12, word of the excellent port and fertile lands eventually attracted more settlers. Today, it’s the largest and most important settlement in northern Iceland. Perhaps the most iconic landmark is Jólagarðurinn, a bright red cabin covered with candy where it’s always Christmas. For more traditional cabins, you can head a few kilometers outside of town to see the 19th century Laufás turf homes. Nature lovers can see nearly every plant native to Iceland (plus plenty of foreign species) at the Arctic Botanical Gardens or take a whale-watching trip. If you’re hungry, Akureyri has a soft spot for junk food like their signature cheese burger with the french fries between the buns. Afterward, enjoy Iceland’s best ice-cream at Brynjuís.
