A Georgian Eastern Orthodox marvel and UNESCO World Heritage Site stands proudly in the Kakheti region, revered as one of the four Great Cathedrals of the Georgian Orthodox world.
The grandeur of Alaverdi Monastery dominates the fertile river valley, set against the majestic backdrop of the Caucasus Mountains. With parts dating back to the 6th century, the monastery’s crown jewel is the present-day cathedral, built in the 11th century by Kvirike III of Kakheti. Its imposing structure, shaped like a cross with three apses, showcases an interior of utmost splendor. Within the fortified walls, Alaverdi Monastery houses various buildings, including an episcopal palace, a refectory, and wine cellars where the monks produce and store their sacred wine. Over the centuries, the cathedral has undergone restoration and embellishment by several rulers, reflecting its significance as a Georgian Orthodox monument. Entry is free of charge and the monastery is open every day, with women required to wear a headscarf upon entrance and men not to wear shorts or hats.
