In just a few years, Alexandroupoli grew from a humble fishing village to the regional capital, without forgetting about its heritage.
Founded in the 19th century by fishermen, their village became an important crossroads when a railroad station was built, even becoming a stop on the legendary Orient Express in 1897. Today, fishing is still a major part of the regional capital’s identity, regularly holding an exciting “fish auction” in its fish market. Visitors can enjoy a pleasant stroll along the waterfront promenade before stopping to enjoy some fresh seafood and ocean views. The city also has a wealth of neo-classical buildings thanks to its 19th century boom. Housed in one, the Ethnological Museum of Thrace covers Thrace’s folk culture and customs from the 18th century to the 1970’s through a variety of exhibits, ranging from traditional clothing to a sesame-oil press.
