Uruguay
This winery's sustainable, small scale, high quality wine preserves a centuries-old tradition.
With a wine-making tradition dating back to the nineteenth century, Uruguay is considered one of the world’s finest wine producers, and the Alto de la Ballena Winery aims to keep it that way. Owners Paula Pivel and Alvaro Lorenzo decided to keep the tradition of winemaking alive by starting their winery in 1998. Located in the southeast area of the country near Maldonado, they chose a location that combines beauty with proper growing conditions. The estate lies in a section of Uruguay where the characteristics of the soil and landscape are conducive to producing varieties of grapes for dry quality wines. Enjoy a Merlot, Tannat, Syrah and local cheese while taking in the impressive surrounding landscape.
