Alto Vista Chapel

A small Catholic sanctuary sits atop the hills overlooking the northern coast of Aruba in striking bright color.

About

Alto Vista Chapel, in all its bright yellow glory, is a prominent religious landmark on the island that draws visitors from all walks of life. Originally established in the village of Alto Vista, the present chapel, completed in 1952, stands at the same historic location where the conversion of Aruban Indians to Christianity commenced. Surrounded by a desert landscape of sand, cacti, and shrubs, the chapel offers a serene atmosphere for meditation and worship. The chapel is encircled by semicircular pews and stone benches, while enshrined crosses, including an ancient Spanish one, and an altar statue of the Virgin Mary sit inside. Outside is a labyrinth built in the style of the Chartres Labyrinth. This ancient design, with 11 circuits and 85 lunations, allows modern-day pilgrims to engage in prayer, meditation, and personal growth as they walk its paths at their own pace. Alto Vista Chapel also hosts a traditional pilgrimage on Good Friday, where local Catholics walk on foot from Oranjestad to the chapel.
