Spread across an entire hilltop, this vast castle complex was originally the seat of the Pontic kings.
Dominating a hilltop that’s been fortified since the Bronze Age, Amasya Castle has been repaired, restored, and rebuilt by the many kingdoms and empires that have controlled the region. Once the heart of the Pontic kingdom, the castle remained in use until the 18th century when it lost its military importance, and eventually fell into ruin. Today, visitors are free to explore the vast castle complex, where you’ll find the ruins of everything from Turkish Baths and mosques, to armories and warehouses- there’s even a secret passage! And of course, from the top of the castle you’re rewarded with fantastic panoramic views. Though not in the castle complex, 18 tombs of Pontic kings have been carved into the cliff below the castle. Please note: due to the required hiking, this stop is not advisable for those with mobility issues.
