Ananuri Fortress

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a captivating castle complex nestled alongside the shimmering turquoise waters of the Aragvi River.

About

Ananuri Fortress is an architectural gem sparkling with the stories of bygone battles, and featuring the unique fusion of styles that characterizes Georgian design. During the 18th century, the fortress served as the residence of the Aragvi feudal dynasty and witnessed numerous battles that shaped Georgian history. Despite enduring centuries of turmoil, including clan massacres, peasant revolts, and fires, the fortress miraculously stands to this day. The complex features two interconnected castles fortified by a curtain wall, designed for defense, and three churches. The largest church boasts a remarkable Georgian Orthodox grapevine cross intricately carved into its facade. Its architectural elements embody the diverse influences of Greco-Roman, Byzantine, and Persian empires. Strategically positioned between the Aragvi and Vedzatkhevi rivers, the fortress created a natural gateway that prevented enemy armies from passing unnoticed, and stands as a reminder of formidable defense in the region where intruders were left at the mercy of its vigilant defenders.
