Ancient Messini

According to local legend, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was the birthplace of Zeus.

About

Founded in 369 BC by the Theban general Epaminondas after finally overthrowing the Spartans, who had ruled over the Thebans for 400 years, Messini would become the capital of the free Messenian state, guarded by 9 kilometers of walls. About the size of Olympia, the site was never destroyed or covered by later settlements, leaving it in exceptional condition. Today, visitors are greeted by a huge amphitheatre, which has been reconstructed and is still in use today. The ancient capital was equipped with the most cosmopolitan comforts of the age, complete with public toilets, running water, and (after some Roman modification) a gladiator arena. If the city seems particularly easy to navigate, that’s because it follows the Hippodamian grid. Nearby, the archaeology museum exhibits artefacts from the site and helps educate visitors in more detail.
