The ruins of this ancient city mark the birthplace of Aristotle.
Founded in 655 BC, the ancient city of Stagira is best known as the birthplace of Aristotle. In 348 BC, Philip II of Macedon conquered and destroyed the city. In exchange for Aristotle tutoring his son Alexander (the Great), Philip rebuilt the city, even adding new structures like an aqueduct, two shrines to Demeter, and resettled the city's inhabitants he had enslaved. Today, visitors can walk through the remains of the city, which are still being excavated, to learn more about the ancient city, and appreciate the stupendous views of the sea.
