These sky-scraping peaks are an inspiration to explorers and vista-hunters alike.
At the end of a stunning drive up a valley and past the turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki is the awe-inspiring Aoraki Mount Cook National Park. There are many amazing walks from Mount Cook Village and not all of them require huge amounts of fitness. For an easy route take the track to Tasman Lake, which is constantly full of mini icebergs, or the steeper Hooker Valley track, which takes you past the eponymous lake - both of which will take you to the foot of Mount Cook itself. Mount Cook is where the first man to conquer Everest, Sir Edmund Hillary, trained for his expedition. A short but sharp climb up to Red Tarns makes for a great view over the village, while a climb up the Mueller Hut Route, as far as Sealy Tarns Viewpoint, offers unsurpassed views towards Mount Sefton and it’s constantly creaking glaciers.
