Aracataca

The birthplace of Gabriel Garcia Marquez bring the magic of Macondo to life for dedicated fans.

About

Founded in 1885, Aracataca has relied heavily on agriculture since its inception, and up until the Great Depression, was a major banana producer. After the banana industry collapsed, Aracataca was largely forgotten until Gabriel Garcia Marquez was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Most tourists come to see the landmarks that inspired One Hundred Years of Solitude, such as the stone-bottomed stream, historic railway station, and Gabo’s childhood home, which is now a museum dedicated to the author. Throughout Aracataca are murals related to Gabo, and monuments to his characters. In 2006 they even tried to rename the town to "Aracataca-Macondo". Die-hard fans might even want to opt for a guided tour of the town to get as much Gabo gab as possible.
