Archaeological Museum of Cherchell

Admire one of the best collections of Greek and Roman artifacts in Africa in this exceptional museum.

About

The Archaeological Museum of Cherchell is one of the best places to visit in Africa for antiquity lovers. After all, the city of Cherchell is over 2,500 years old, and was once the seat of a kingdom and a Roman provincial capital. So it should come as no surprise that a wealth of artifacts have been uncovered here during archaeological excavations. Among the collection you’ll find marble sculptures collected by King Juba II, including one of his wife, Cleopatra Selene II, as well as a colossal Hercules, and Diane the Huntress. Then there are the ornate Byzantine silver works, and intricate mosaics. If you’d like to see where many of these artifacts came from, you can extend your stop time to visit the Roman theater, Roman baths, and Civile Basilica on the outskirts of town.
