Greece
The this ancient seaside city is one of the most important archaeological sites in the region.
Founded in the 7th century BC, the Archaeological Site of Mesimvria was once a thriving Thracian city known as Zoni, until it was conquered by the Macedonians, and later Romans. Today, it’s considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the region thanks to the wealth of artefacts that have been uncovered here, including the city’s own minted coins. Exploring the site today, visitors will find the remains of the city’s defensive wall, guard towers, and residences, as well as a 4th century BC Sanctuary of Demeter, 6th century BC temple of Apollo, and collection of large earthenware jugs.
