Poland
Filled with Europe’s oldest wooden polychrome paintings, this UNESCO-listed medieval church was built without any metal- not even nails.
The Archangel Michael's Church in Dębno was built in the 15th century on the site of an even older church. Despite Poland’s many trials and tribulations through the centuries, this wooden Gothic church emerged unscathed, proof, according to locals, of God’s protection. Today, his charming church is one of Poland’s national landmarks, believed to be the second oldest structure of its kind in the country. The church interior is covered with Europe’s oldest polychrome paintings, created around 1500. These are accompanied by the church’s many other historic treasures, like a 14th century crucifix and tabernacle.
