Aregua

This charming town on the Circuito de Oro is known for its art galleries, rare natural formations, and sweet offerings.

About

Set atop a hill, Aregua takes its name from the indigenous inhabitants that established the area before Spanish colonization and loosely translates to ‘those from above’. Follow Avenida del Lago, or Lake Avenue, to get a bird’s eye view of the town. This historical route starts at the hilltop church of Iglesia de La Candelaria and runs down to the banks of the Lake Ypacarai. On the way down, don’t miss Cerro Coi! This unique hillside rock formation is known to exist in only two other countries. Get a taste of the local craftsman culture in town by visiting one of the many art galleries and then purchase some traditional pottery pieces. In addition to the arts, Aregua is known for its strawberry production and hosts annual festivals showcasing the fruit. Sink your teeth into something sweet before exploring the rest of this lakeside gem.
