Queen Isabella I of Castile was raised, and the Young Man of Arevalo born, in this once fortified medieval village.
The regional agricultural center in the Middle Ages, the capital of La Moraña grew more refined over the years and is now an important example of Ávila's Mudejar architecture. Within the city centre, numerous landmarks, delight visitors with their distinct architecture. The Plaza de La Villa is the town’s historic center, and is surrounded by historic architecture, with an ancient church at either end. The church of San Martín, with its twin towers, was once a mosque, and still retains many Mudejar details. Today, it’s a museum that is only open for special events. The church of Santo Domingo de Silos creates an interesting architectural contrast, where Gothic naves meet the Mudejar apse and brick walls. The imposing red brick castle was once home to Queen Isabel the Catholic, but now houses a farming museum, and is only open on weekends.
