Arsoli

Topped by an 11th century castle, this perfectly preserved medieval village is the perfect place to experience unadulterated rural Italy.

About

First settled by the Equi, they were quickly conquered by the growing Roman empire. It was the new influx of Roman settlers who called the city Arxula - "little fortress". The area’s abundance of water prompted the construction of aqueducts to help alleviate the water problems of a constantly growing Rome. The Nobel-winning poet Luigi Pirandello would often enjoy his summers here, calling it “little Paris”. Today, the narrow, cobbled streets are perfectly preserved, and the ancient square is still marked by a Roman milestone. The castello overlooking the town from its rocky spur once belonged to the Benedictine Order, but has been privately owned since 1574. One the other side of the castle, the manicured gardens offer a more refined view.
