Balanced on the edge of a cliff, this medieval church offers visitors stupendous views of the rugged countryside, and its robust architecture.
First built by the Thracians in the 5th century BC, this clifftop fortress was further enhanced by Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman rulers in an attempt to make the strategic position an impenetrable stronghold. In the 15th century, two Ottoman brothers were vying for control of the fortress, and rather than keep it as a target, the stronger ended up destroying everything but the church. Now considered one of the best preserved samples of Medieval Christian architecture in the world, its continued existence was thanks to this small act of consideration. Today, visitors can enjoy the church’s medieval murals and unique icons, as well as its historic architecture that clings to the cliff-face. From within the church, or on the ridge above, visitors or rewarded with jaw-dropping panoramic views.
